MENCIA RED 2015 DO Bierzo
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer GODELIA
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. The last time I tasted this wine was the 2009 vintage for the April 12, 2014 Vintages release. This 2015 is immensely better. Godelias 100% Mencia has a very deep intense purple colour. The gently spicy nose shows lots of character and fruit - bright ripe plum, black cherry and red currants which really come alive on the palate. Dry, medium bodied, harmonious and surprisingly fresh with a bright, lifted flavours that are balanced by a subtle touch of refined oak on the lingering faintly leathery finish. What a joy to drink, it would be perfect with that Thanksgiving turkey, especially if served at just slightly below room temperature at 18. It has 14.5% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar with lot number L021219 on the back label. It was aged for 12 months in 350, 400 and 500 liter French oak barrels. Of these, 60% are second-hand, 30% are new and the remaining 10% have previously been used for white wines.
