MENCIA RED 2015 DO Bierzo |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
GODELIA |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. The last time I tasted this wine was the 2009 vintage for the April 12, 2014 Vintages release. This 2015 is immensely better. Godelia’s 100% Mencia has a very deep intense purple colour. The gently spicy nose shows lots of character and fruit - bright ripe plum, black cherry and red currants which really come alive on the palate. Dry, medium bodied, harmonious and surprisingly fresh with a bright, lifted flavours that are balanced by a subtle touch of refined oak on the lingering faintly leathery finish. What a joy to drink, it would be perfect with that Thanksgiving turkey, especially if served at just slightly below room temperature at 18º. It has 14.5% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar with lot number L021219 on the back label. It was aged for 12 months in 350, 400 and 500 liter French oak barrels. Of these, 60% are second-hand, 30% are new and the remaining 10% have previously been used for white wines.

TASTING NOTE: Black cherry, plum and currant flavors give this red a rich core of fruit, while leafy, licorice and mineral notes add complexity. Well-integrated tannins and gentle acidity focus the plush texture. Harmonious, showing good depth. Drink now through 2025. Ranked #34 in the 2019 Wine Spectator Top 100. Score - 93 (Thomas Matthews, winespectator.com, Oct. 15, 2019) |
