HEDGES FAMILY ESTATE RED MOUNTAIN 2016 Red Mountain, Yakima Valley
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer HEDGES FAMILY ESTATE
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. I am a long time fan of Hedges and this 2016 was a complete surprise for me in terms of what I had initially expected. Unfortunately, the LCBO 93-point note quoted in the Vintages Catalogue is for a different wine - not the one being sold. The actual blend of Red Mountain is 38% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Syrah, 8% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, 1% Touriga Nacional, 1% Tinta Ca and 1% Souza. It shows anose avalanche of oak complexity as it was 100% barrel aged for 19 to 21 months in 40% new oak - American (64%) and French oak (36%). The latter information from the winery website contradicts what is on the back label - 74% of the oak was neutral and [only] 26% new. It has a deep intense ruby-violet-red colour. The nose is extremely cedary (shades of of a Gran Reserva Rioga) with lots of baked, uber ripe Damson plum fruit. Its medium-full bodied, well structured, harmonious, intense, cedar-sandalwood-driven, warm, ripe plum flavours with a lingering, somewhat earthy, licorice-tinged, leathery finish. With 13.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar. With some periodic harvest rain and relatively large crops, the hefty PH 3.82 and 5.9 g/L total acidity suggest that the wine may well be quite ready-to-drink. However, the presence of wood tannins and obvious high dry extract may well extend the drinking period considerable. CSPC 1594

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain (76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 5% Syrah, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec) was brought up in mostly American oak (13% new). It's one of the darker colored reds in the lineup and offers a Bordeaux-like bouquet of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, earth, and leather. Medium to full-bodied, pure, seamless, and beautifully layered, it shines on its purity of fruit and balance. It will keep for 10-15 years.
