VIÑA CUBILLO CRIANZA 2011 DOCa Rioja |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Deep intense dark ruby colour with a slightly ambering edge. Intense, complex, mineral-driven, faintly herbal, fairly ripe, plum-red-pepper nose with lots of cedary, sandalwood notes. Very dry, medium to medium-full bodied, quite extracty, fairly dense, minerally, tangy, plum tomato flavours with a lingering, very faintly dusty, firm, still youthful, high acid finish. It is now 9-years-old and there are still lots of youthful tannins present. This blend of 65% Tempranillo, 25% Mazuelo and 10% Garnacha (no Graciano?)that according to the winery spec sheet has only 13% alcohol with a somewhat elevated 6.5 g/L total acidity (lot number L-0778 on the back label). It was aged for 3 years in American oak barrels (225 l) and is unfiltered. I will decant to se if this makes a difference and report back. The 2010 (not presented) was released on August 31, 2019 at $31.95. |

TASTING NOTE: You can expect the 2011 to reflect this wine's characteristic focused, lively, expressive style. It will offer rich, complex notes of spice, dried fruit, dried herbs and vanilla. This Tempranillo-led blend will continue to evolve for another 5+ years and will be an excellent match for lamb with all the trimmings. |
