Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CHÂTEAU LE GRAND RETOUR
A REPEAT of the 2017 that was released on February 22, 2020 at $15.95 with lot number L18/262. Rather than recycle my previous 87.5-point tasting note, I wanted to assess this new shipment which had a NEW lot number L20132 on the upper part of the glass bottle. It likely means that this batch was bottled on May 11, 2020 from stainless steel holding tanks, whereas the previous shipment was bottled on September 19, 2018. While I can not taste them side by side, I am using the identical ISO glass. Here is my note. Extremely deep intense purple colour. Gently spicy, fairly intense, attractive, ripe, plummy-red-cherry purée nose. Dry, medium bodied, harmonious, slightly spicy, attractive, ripe plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, fairly crisp, nicely structured gently complex (a faint hint of mocha-chocolate), harmonious finish. This blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre has 14.5% alcohol and now 6 g/L residual sugar (up from 5) is really showing much better than the previous shipment and is ready to enjoy. A real, well-priced, ready-to-drink crowd-pleaser that is moving to 89-points as it sits in the glass. CSPC 224592

TASTING NOTE: I loved the 2017 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu. It has a terrific bouquet of black cherries, mulberries, licorice, and peppery garrigue. Medium-bodied and concentrated, with fine tannins and a great finish, this rich, powerful Côtes du Rhône has loads to love. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years. Maturity: 2019-2024.
