MANGA DEL BRUJO 2017 DO Calatayud
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer EL ESCOCÉS VOLANT
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Trying to navigate all the conflicting tasting notes out there is a challenge. Sadly, the note appearing in the Vintages Catalogue is wrong when you look at what the winemaker says. In any case, this exceedingly tasty, bargain priced blend of 75% old-vine Garnacha, 15% Syrah, 10% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo is partly aged in new and used French and American oak and produced by Scottish MW Norrel Robertson. It incorporates “barrel components with higher toast and parcels with more tannic structure and minerality” making it gently meaty, very bright and Rhone-like! Deep intense purple colour, it exudes attractive, ripe, plum-cherry fruit. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, harmonious and well structured, the flavours go on and on. It has 15% alcohol and 1.8 g/L residual sugar (not 5 g/L as appears in the Vintages Catalogue) with lot number L180520 on the back label. Buy it today! The 2008 (not presented) was released on April 30, 2011 at $15.95. CSPC 15073

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Manga deIl Brujo is an unoaked red blend produced with 75% old-vine Garnacha, 15% Syrah, 10% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo. t fermented and matured in epoxy-linen for 15 to 18 months, depending on the lot. I tasted from the second bottling from December 2019. The aromas go more in the direction of red fruit and some more Mediterranean herbs compared with the Papa Luna, the other red I tasted from the same vintage and a similar price. This has more finesse, fine tannins and integrated acidity. Most of these reds are bottled with a high level of dissolved gas, a way to keep the wine and preserve it in the bottle; it keeps the wine fresh. This is a very good 2017, fresher than many. Drink date: 2020-2023. Score - 90 (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com, April 30, 2020) Price $ 16.95
