Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. (Please note that this sold out on Sunday the day after I posted my July 25th review. Unfortunately, even I did not get a bottle) I have tasted a number of high-priced rosé wines at Vintages which rarely caused much excitement. However, this is my first taste of a remarkable Gran Reserva Rioja Rose that is actually under-priced. Faintly ambering light orange colour, this 2010 has an intense, distinctive, gently toasty, Seville orange marmalade-tinged nose that brings to life all the complex nuances of what it takes to make the greatest of Riojas so incredibly special. The more you smell, the more that appears! Persimmon, tangerine, rose hip, violets, sandalwood , even a hint of an ancient Fino - it goes on and on. It is dry, medium bodied, fairly well structured and intense, and yet well balanced, delicate and harmonious all at the same time with tangy, toasty, plummy-black-cherry-cassis fruit - a spider’s web of maturing albeit fully alive flavours that go on and on. This blend of 60% Garnacho, 30% Tempranillo and 10% Viura has 13% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with a perfect 6.5 g/L total acidity and lot number L-0559 on the back label. It spent 4 years in barrel and is unfiltered, which accounts for the outstanding mouthfeel. While this López de Heredia Rose may not resonate with everyone, it sure does with me and my only regret is that I didn't get a bottle or so to share with fellow wine fans. NEW in Vintages and only 20,000 bottles produced. CSPC 15781

TASTING NOTE: López de Heredia ages this rosé before release. Tim Matthews only recently reviewed the 2009, awarding it 93 points and calling it distinctive and unique \"... [with] tangy acidity and light, firm tannins ... plenty of structure for food ... Orange peel, tarragon, iodine and beeswax ... dried cherry and tangerine flavors\" (winespectator.com, March 31, 2020). Matthews suggested a drinking window extending through 2029. Price $ 41.95
