LAURA'S RED 2016 VQA Niagara Peninsula |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
CREEKSIDE |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Very deep intense purple colour. Complex, spicy, intense, ripe, plummy, black cherry purée nose with some cedary notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, slightly spicy, tangy, intense, ripe, gently complex, plum-cassis-black-cherry flavours with a lingering, fairly high acid, gently cedary finish. Ripe and ready-to-drink, this has 13% alcohol and 3 g/L residual sugar with a screwcap closure. This FOURTH REPEAT of the 2016 was last released on August 17, 2019 at $25.00. |

TASTING NOTE: A blend of cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot, petit verdot and malbec, Creekside's Laura's Red has been the winery's calling card since 1999. The 2016 is a particularly successful vintage, ripe to be sure per the warm vintage, well structured, with woolly tannins and balanced acids. The fleshy, plush, creamy texture and dark fruit flavours will appeal widely, as will the dash of sweet oak spice. I'd suggest cellaring another year or so for more textural development, or hold into the mid-late '20s. Score - 90 (John Szabo, MS, winealign.com, Feb. 19, 2020) |
