OVF OLD GARNACHA VINES 2016 DO Calatayud |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
BODEGA VIRGEN DE LA SIERRA |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Fairly intense purple colour. Spicy, bright, plum-blueberry nose with some slight sandalwood notes. Dry, medium bodied, slightly spicy, fairly tangy, plummy flavours with a faintly dusty, rather crisp finish. This Garnacha was aged for 6 months in a combination of 50% used French oak barrels and 50% used American oak barrels. Beware of the 93-point tasting note appearing in the Vintages Catalogue dated August 2, 2018. This batch was bottled on September 10, 2019. I am sorry to say, that for the record, this new batch does NOT have a “lovely, creamy texture”. Produced by Bodegas Virgen de la Sierra a grape grower’s co-op with 579 members and 710 hectares (1,753 acres) of vines growing at 750 meters above sea level, with an average age of 40 years. |

TASTING NOTE: Enveloping nose of blue fruit and impressive concentration on the palate of this expressive garnacha. Lovely, creamy texture, in spite of a healthy dose of tannin, the long finish leaves you in no doubt. Drink or hold. Score - 93 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Aug. 2, 2018) |
