CHÂTEAU LA GUILBONNERIE 2014 AC Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux |

Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Wow, here is a wonderful, still bright, lively, ripe, New World take on an Old World classic. Deep violet-red colour, Very attractive, very faintly earthy, sandalwood-driven nose with lots of warm, ripe, gently juicy, plum-cherry-cassis notes. Dry, medium bodied and yet surprisingly well structured, slightly smoky, juicy, maturing, ripe, cassis-plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, gently cedary, lifted finish. At only $15.95, this really is an exceptionally well-priced Bordeaux blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L14GUIL on the back label and 30/03/2015 on the lower part of the glass bottle. It means that this is actually the original bottling which explains the complexity along with great texture and flavour integration. New at Vintages. |

TASTING NOTE: [The Vintages panel tasted this wine in April 2019, finding it to be a solid value that was approachable, drinking well with enough freshness and primary fruit to age longer.] Intense smoky and blackberry aromas make this a bold, almost showy wine, but the ripe fruit carries the style without any problem. With a little more complexity this would rate even more highly. Drink now. Score - 90 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 13, 2017) |
