HENNERS BRUT NV Méthode Traditionnelle
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer HENNERS
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. I first discovered English Sparklers at Prowein in 2014. I was astonished by the quality of some of these early efforts all made in the classic Methode Champenoise. It has taken six years for the LCBO to get on board and this remarkable NV (bottled in May 2018) really deserves your undivided attention. It has a bright light straw colour with a steady stream of fine bubbles. The nose says it all - elegant, gently toasty, ripe lemon-apple meringue with some attractive mineral notes. On the palate, it's dry, well balanced and surprisingly well structured with a refined, bright, ripe, lemon-apple flavours along with a lingering, lifted, effervescent finish. Quite remarkable and better than most of the Champagne stocked by the LCBO. Why? First, the quality grapes from this exceptionally unique terrior and, second, how it was made. Located in Herstmonceux East Sussex, this is a blend of estate grown Pinot Noir (38%), Chardonnay (34%) and Pinot Meunier (28%). Approximately 85% of the wine goes through malolactic fermentation with a proportion (10%) is fermented in aged oak barrels. It is bottle aged on its lees for 48 months before being disgorged and has 12% alcohol and a modest 7.5 g/L residual sugar. The Canadian allocation is only 59 six-packs and they are available in Flagship LCBO stores. CSPC 13832

TASTING NOTE: This bubbly was produced solely from grapes grown on the winery's estate. It's bursting with crisp apple, juicy citrus and rich, toasty brioche notes on the way to a long, luxurious finish. Plenty of quality here.
