Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer R. LOPEZ DE HEREDIA
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Deep intense amber-tinged ruby colour with garnet undertones. Intense, very complex, fairly spicy, quite cedary, sandalwood-tinged, ripe, maturing, plum-cherry purée nose with some violets and very faint, leafy, garrique notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, slightly spicy, complex and yet refined, Bordeaux-inspired, maturing, ripe, plum-cherry flavours with a very attractive, lingering, surprisingly high-acid, gently cedary, sandalwood-tinged finish. This exceptional new blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo has 13% alcohol and 3 g/L residual sugar with lot number L0693 on the back label. It was aged for six years in 225 L American barrels which are all made at the winery from imported Appalachian mountain oak. This 2007 seems a tad more elegant than the recommended best buy 2006 (***/***+) with 94-points that was released on November 9, 2019 at $58.95. CSPC 356337

TASTING NOTE: Following the appreciation of the 2007 vintage from María José López de Heredia, the red 2007 Viña Tondonia Reserva is showing great, revealing unusual finesse and elegance. The nose is a little reticent but nuanced and complex, a little shy rather than explosive. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very refined. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Viña Tondonia Reserva of recent years. It was bottled in November 2015. Drink date: 2019-2030.
