One of 71 items (57% of 124 releases) not presented for evaluation under new LCBO policies. I purchased a bottle at a LCBO Flagship store (not on display) - here is my tasting note. First, let me tell you that this is actually labelled as Capelan and not Cotes Capelan which is how it is listed in the Vintages Catalogue. The front label says that there were 4,100 bottles of Capelan and that the one I tasted was No. 2,493. I tasted this flagship 2016 after the more youthful, less expensive 2017 Vendage (with a great 94-points at $52.95). At $97.95, this remarkable 2016 is even better and worthy of the investment. First, it's deeper and denser in colour - a very dark ruby-purple. Secondly, the Capelan nose shows more intensity and complexity. There are shades of exotic spices, wisps of smoke and intense, ripe, plum-cassis-red-black-cherry fruit with some hints of blueberry. Finally, Capelan's palate was richer, fuller-bodied and more complex with a greater depth of flavour. Rich, ripe, rounded, warm, plummy-black-cherry-cassis-raspberry fruit envelopes the palate with a lingering, gently cedary, lifted, sandalwood-tinged finish. It's very elegant and not overstated - 97-points! With 14.5% alcohol, this outstanding unfiltered blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre has lot number L18320/3 on the lower part of the glass bottle. |

TASTING NOTE: La Ferme du Mont's 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan is a fantastic example of Southern Rhône Grenache, albeit one made with a modern take (about a third of the wine was raised in barrels). Hints of vanilla appear on the nose, adding a bit of richness to the bright red berries and orange zest notes. It's a full-bodied, lush, creamy-textured wine, with fine tannins and hints of mulling spices on the long, silky finish. Great intensity, vibrant fruit and a plush texture make this a special wine indeed. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. Drink date: 2018-2030. Score - 96 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2018) |
