RIOJA GRAN RESERVA 2012 Rioja Alta, DOCa Rioja |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
SONSIERRA |
Extremely deep intense purple colour. Intense, complex, very cedary, baked plum nose with some herbal notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, dense, intense, baked, plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, high acid, extremely cedary finish. This 100% Tempranillo was aged for 24 months in 70% French and 30% American oak and then 3 years in bottle. The Wine Enthusiast reports that it sells for $40 in the US. This suggests that the extremely low $20.95 price point (the cheapest Gran Reserva at the LCBO) could be a mark-up error. It has not appeared in Vintages before. |

TASTING NOTE: I loved the nose of the 2012 Gran Reserva, which was surprisingly aromatic with classical notes of cherries in liqueur, blonde tobacco, hints of cured meat, spices and smoke. This is always a good compromise between the modern and more classical style. The palate is nicely balanced with fine tannins. Drink date: 2018-2022. Score - 90 (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com, Feb. 28, 2018) |
