TASTING NOTE: This is 50th Anniversary bottling is very appropriate for Fume Blanc in particular. It is a name Mondavi cleverly coined at a time when few Americans understood white Bordeaux (after which it is patterned) and even fewer had heard of a grape called sauvignon blanc. Fume was an excellent, French-sounding four letter word that referenced the smokiness obtained through barrel aging, and also gave an insider's nod to Pouilly-Fume, the tiny Loire appellation famous for its sauvignons. This is quite full bodied, intense, dry wine with well woven, complex aromas of roasted herbs (rosemary), toast, vanillin and vaguely tropical guava/gooseberry jam fruit. It has some heft at 14.5% alcohol, plus very good acidity. The finish is lemon-lime, herbs and toast, hitting excellent length. Ideal [for] grilled white meats and fish.
