PIASTRAIA 2013 DOC Bolgheri Superiore

Very deep intense purple colour. Complex, slightly earthy, leathery, fairly intense, ripe plum nose with some sandalwood and talc notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, quite well structured, fairly extracty, intense, baked over ripe plum and cherry flavours with a lingering, leathery, sandalwood-tinged, high acid finish. This blend of 25% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Sangiovese and 25% Syrah has 13.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L15.01.1 on the back label. Not quite up to the recommended 2012 (***) also with 90-points that was released on May 27, 2017 at $38.95. TONY ASPLER / 90-points / TRY - Cedary-vanilla, red and blackcurrant nose; medium-bodied, dry, well-structured blackcurrant and blackberry flavours. CSPC 709980

TASTING NOTE: Now in its second year as a Bolgheri Superiore wine, the 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Piastraia shows a deep sense of inner elegance and feminine grace. I love the bouquet on this wine that has energy and intensity, but also feels lightweight and crisp at the same time. In fact, I would suggest serving it a degree or two lower than average serving temperature to bring the little details to light. Wild berry and dried cherry are followed by spice, pressed violets and wet earth. The tannins are very silky and long. Piastraia is equal parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Syrah aged in oak for 18 months. Score - 94 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Oct. 28, 2016) Price $ 38.95
