The Bas Armagnac area produces arguably the finest examples of Armagnac's famed Brandy. Though often confused with Cognac, with which it has many similarities, Armagnac is a manifestly different animal. Armagnac is produced in Gascony, southeast of Bordeaux, and is distilled once. Cognac is created north of Bordeaux and is distilled twice. This distinction means Armagnac is lower in alcohol and has a more robust, overt flavour profile. This vintage example from one of the top producers of Armagnac will display notable oak-influenced aromas and flavours with citrus, pear and spice. It will be balanced, with a refined bite and kick imparted by the single distillation. (April 25, 2013) |
