PINOT NOIR 2016 Aconcagua Costa |

Fairly deep purple red colour. Fairly reductive, somewhat earthy, faintly sweaty, baked raspberry nose with lots of cedary notes. Dry, medium bodied, very tangy, slightly spicy, very gently cedary, somewhat lightish, crancherry flavours with a lingering, high acid, somewhat earthy finish. Has 13% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar. Beware, despite all the high scores and accolades I see, the bottles that both Tony Aspler and I tasted in the lab (with lot number LM17263 on the back label) had some reductive notes (the first bottle presented had some tca notes). So, to put it mildly, I was disappointed with what I previewed and look forward to trying this 2016 once again. Also, this shipment has a new cspc 541151 - but has been in Vintages before as a recommended best buy for the 2015 (**+) with 89-points that was released on May 13, 2017 at $24.95 (cspc 494807). As much as I admire these Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noirs, I do not find any resemblance between them and classic Pinot Noir coming from the Cote de Nuits. |

TASTING NOTE: I caught the 2016 Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir very shortly after bottling. 2016 was a challenging vintage, but for earlier ripening varieties it resulted in wines of outstanding vivacity, tension and character. The only significant change introduced with this vintage was that some 10% of the wine spent the élevage time in egg-shaped concrete vats. The rest aged in French barriques, mostly used, for 11 months. There are some iron and beef blood aromas with some more floral aromas, obviously young and primary. The palate is explosive, with only 13% alcohol and sharp texture and acidity, with very tasty flavors in the long finish. There is a chalky sensation in the tannins, which are very fine-grained. There is no sweetness whatsoever, and the fruit is bright. Really elegant. Drink date: 2017-2021. Score - 93 (Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com, April 28, 2017) |
