TASTING NOTE: The only blend produced at Matetic is the 2014 Corralillo Winemaker's Blend, a cool climate, coastal Syrah-based blend with about 25% each Malbec and Cabernet Franc. The rationale is that the Syrah should provide spicy tones, Cabernet Franc structure and elegant tannins, and Malbec adds a floral touch. The grapes come from their El Rosario vineyard, which was planted between 1999 and 2004 in the San Antonio Valley at 19 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean and 250 meters altitude. There they have 67 hectares of different grape varieties on red granite soils rich in quartz. The destemmed and crushed grapes fermented in open-top tanks with natural yeasts after a seven day cold soak. The wine matured in French barrels for 16 months, including malolactic. None of these wines are explosive or in-your-face; the house style is restrained, elegant and fresh wines, so the blend couldn't be different. However, I don't think the blend increases complexity, and the wine is also more about the place than the varieties. It's medium-bodied and harmonious, nicely integrated and balanced. A spicy blend.
