Extremely deep intense purple colour. Fairly attractive, slightly spicy, gently complex, ripe plum-cherry nose with some cedar-sandalwood notes. Dry, medium bodied, quite well structured, slightly spicy, ripe plum-cherry puree flavours with a lingering, fairly high acid, gently cedary, faintly rustic finish. TASTING NOTE: The 2014 IGP Cotes Catalanes Cayrol Carignan Vieilles Vignes comes from the black schist soils of the Agly valley (mostly from around Maury) and 100-year-old vines. Seeing a slightly longer elevage than the Tessellae cuvee and spending 14 months all in demi-muids, it gives up lots of spice and sandalwood characteristics, as well as more black cherry liqueur, chocolate and dusty, rock-like minerality. Hedonistic, textured, rounded and downright sexy, it's another terrific wine from this estate that readers should snatch up. It should dish out tons of pleasure over the coming 4-5 years.
