Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |

ALPHA ESTATE |
Very deep intense purple colour. Very slightly spicy, intense, attractive, ripe plum-cherry-cassis nose with some gentle cedar notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, dense, quite well structured, very slightly spicy, ripe plum-cherry-cassis flavours with a lingering, high acid, elegant cedar finish. Has 14.5% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar with lot number L5306 on the back label. Unfortunately a second bottle was faulty. TONY ASPLER / 91-points / BUY - Cedary, raisiny, spicy-peppery plum bouquet; medium to full-bodied, dry and savoury with lively acidity. Hold 2 - 3 years. |

TASTING NOTE: In structure, finesse and precision, this is arguably Alpha Estate's best ever, although it has some things to prove in the cellar. It is also very different than the richer and sexier 2012 in style. Silky, crisp and Burgundian in style, this 2013 seemed rather brilliant and not quite as understated in terms of power as some years can be, although it is still impeccably balanced. It is focused and the finish is tense, but never overwhelming. My only issue was with the nose?and that followed through onto the palate, especially early on?which gave the wine a bit of a high-toned nuance, a touch of Amarone (maybe that yeast strain?). Still, this is quite brilliant on so many levels that I have to lean up on this just now. It may eventually deserve an uptick. It should age beautifully and hopefully it will pull everything together. I saw some signs of that even as it sat in the glass over a couple of hours. It does need a year or three in the cellar, by the way, for best results. As it aired out, it got a bit tighter. That said, it was still approachable even now. If I had some quibbles, I did find myself falling in love with this anyway. At the very reasonable price point, it should be a no-brainer purchase. Drink Date: 2018-2033.
