PINOT NOIR 2016 WO Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Walker Bay
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer HAMILTON RUSSELL
Medium deep purple red colour. Intense, complex, gently smoky, somewhat spicy, very attractive, ripe red and black cherry puree nose. Dry, medium-full bodied, quite well structured, solid, very slightly spicy, ripe plum, red and black cherry puree flavours with a lingering, gently smoky, somewhat cedary, faintly mocha-chocolate-tinged, high acid finish. Well structured and intense and yet very elegant and harmonious with fine length. This REPEAT has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar. It is even showing better that recommended 2015 (***) with 93-points last released on October 1, 2016 at $57.95! CSPC 999516

TASTING NOTE: Inviting bright red. Complex, musky, woodsy scents of dark cherry, raspberry, licorice, flowers, herbs and spicy underbrush; this has the soil complexity and light touch of a top Burgundy. Wonderfully brisk, dry, mineraldriven flavors of dark fruits, spices and herbs. Still a bit youthfully austere, saline and dominated by its acid/tannin structure but even today there's nothing out of place and the wine's seamless texture is utterly refined. Needs time in bottle to blossom, but I suspect this savory, tight-grained Pinot will last a long time. Boasts rare energy and subtle grip for South African Pinot Noir. Turned much more salty with 48 hours in the recorked bottle without losing its verve. Drinking window: 2019-2026. Score - 93 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, May 2017) Price $ 57.95
