KARAS RED 2015 Armavir Region |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
TIERRAS DE ARMENIA |
Extremely deep intense purple colour. Spicy, slightly sweetish, cassis-tinged nose with some cedary notes. Fairly dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, dense, intense, ripe plum-cherry-apple-cassis flavours with a lingering, gently cedary, fairly high acid finish. This pleasant, ready-to-drink blend of Syrah, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Montepulciano, Petit Verdot and the local grape Khndoghni has 14.4% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar. Not a detour but worth trying. |

TASTING NOTE: Evidence indicates that winemaking has existed in Armenia in some fashion for some 6,000 years, making this one of the world's oldest wine-producing regions. Should you find yourself thinking this wine has a modern and international flair, you would be right. Winemaker Gabriel Rogel is from Argentina and is assisted by consulting legend Michel Rolland. Sourced from volcanic soils, this blend of Syrah, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Montepulciano, Petit Verdot and local grape Khndoghni offers big dark fruit, smoke, meat, spice and earth tones. Ripe, soft and very approachable, this is a great introduction to the wines of Armenia. (Vintages panel, Oct. 2016) |
