GOLD VIDAL ICEWINE 2018 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer INNISKILLIN
Assessed from a bottle provided by the producer. The 2018 vintage was a perfect year for icewine with the harvest starting on December 14 at -10ºC and all the clusters being harvested over the next few days. This “Gold Vidal” is slowly fermented in new French oak at an average temperature of 15ºC for 16 days after which it receives an additional three months in barrel before racking and bottling. Bright medium yellow colour, it has an intense, attractive, very sweet, citrusy, Seville orange marmalade nose with fresh, bright, honeyed apricot notes. Very sweet but balanced, it is medium-full bodied, rich and quite creamy with spicy, honeyed, apricot-Seville-orange-marmalade flavours with a lingering, very bright, mouthfilling, crème brûlée finish. This 100% Vidal has 9.5% alcohol and 234 g/L residual sugar with a hefty 10.5 g/L total acidity. I prefer this to be served gently chilled in order to taste all the flavours. Limited distribution. he Pearl (93-points) and the Gold were tasted blind side-by-side, the latter having more richness and complexity was my personal favourite. CSPC 19083

TASTING NOTE: Vidal Icewine was the style that first ushered Ontario onto the world wine stage, and Inniskillin was the producer most responsible, when their 1989 bottling took the top prize at the 1991 Vinexpo. Expect an opulently rich glassful of peach nectar, mango, lychee and honeycomb, with bright acidity keeping things beautifully balanced. Price $ 89.95
