RIESLING ICEWINE 2018 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario |

INNISKILLIN |
Assessed from a bottle provided by the winery. For me, Ontario Riesling Icewine is my number one choice. The reason is that, unlike Vidal, it usually has enough acidify to cut through all the sweetness. This 2018 has a very bright light straw colour. Intense, gently complex, sweet, honeyed, ripe apple puree nose come with some attractive, caramel and Seville orange marmalade notes. Very sweet, medium-bodied, harmonious, well structured, gently spicy, intense, honeyed, bright, fresh ripe apple purée flavours with a lingering, high acid, caramel and Seville orange marmalade tinged finish. It has 9.5% alcohol and 268 g/L residual sugar and a hefty 9.98 g/L total acidity. Unlike the 2017 no bottling number appears on the lower part of the glass bottle on the sample I received from the winery. Tasted side-by-side, I suggest drinking the preferred 2017 now and holding on to the 2018 to evolve. |
