Competition Background

This annual competition is conducted by the Food & Beverage Testing Institute of Canada (FBTI) a not-for-profit organization dedicated to consumer/trade education and enlightenment. This is Canada’s largest competition where Canadian wines have a window to compete one-on-one with imports. More important, all these wines are available for ordering. A total of 493 wines were submitted in 17 classifications. Approximately three dozen wines (7%) were re-tasted due to apparent cork-related problems. There were 32 gold medals (6%), 59 silver medals (12%) and 83 bronze medals (17%). The wines were served blind in the appropriate classes of flights based on grape variety. The average quality of submissions in 2001 was up due to the continuing stringent quality standards demanded by the judging panel. Only wines of merit receive an award. If, for instance, the wines in a class did not score sufficient points, no medal was awarded. The judging was led by Michael Vaughan weekly wine and spirits columnist at the National Post and editor of the monthly Vintage Assessments. Michael Vaughan can be reached at mbv@total.net

A Triumph!
Intense medium-deep red colour. Refined, chocolaty, slightly smoky, ripe plum purée nose with fine hints of limes. Solid, dry, fairly extracty, well balanced, apple-plum purée flavours with just a touch of cedar on the lingering finish.

Deep amber colour. Very rich, sweet, complex, fig and crème caramel nose. Very sweet, creamy, slightly chocolate-prune-plum purée flavours with some sweet raisin pie notes on the lingering finish.
